Katmai National park
After a 2hr weather delay we made the one hour flight from Homer to Katmai via a cessna bush
plane. We landed smoothly on the beach to be greeted by the staff and BEARS
We we then escorted to the camp, given a bear safety talk, and the camp rules explained.
Then it was off to out tent to unpack and rest up if needed for the evening hike.

We were then introduced to Herb, our guide. What a great guy!!! He
is from one of out favorite places Townsend Tn in the Smoky
Mountains. We had a delicious diner made by the camp cook Tony.
After gathering our gear together we started out hike to the Meadow.
This included a walk along the beach, then through a wooded area.
The wooded area was exciting because a bear could be any where!
We reached the meadow and the bear activity was excellent. ( SEE
meadow pictures)
After an exciting time in the meadow we hiked back to camp. A solitary
harbor seal watched us from the ocean. We gathered in the galley
and had desert and pop corn.
Day 2
The next morning we had breakfast and headed out to the tidal flats.
We had a bear in camp this am. The tide can change up to 30 feet at
this latitude! The bears take advantage of this to dig for clams. A red
fox joined us on the beach. On the hike though the wooded part, know
as Nancy's trail, we encountered a mother a cub. We had to move off
the trail and out of her way. (See views of the bears on the Tidal Flats)
Lunch, rest and then back to the meadow…
This eve a bear who we named bubbles based out group very closely
went for a swim and approached us again. video (See how close here.)
Coffee., dessert and sleep…….
Day 3
This morning hike to the far side of the "bootleg" tidal flat area. Joined
by Rosey and here 2 cubs. The one extremely curious one almost
joined us on the trap we were sitting upon. He had to be scared away.
Lunch on the mud flats.
Evening was windy and cold. Not feeling that great we stayed at camp
and conversed with some other guests.
Day 4
This morning the meadow was a bit slow. We walked out on the tidal
flats and watched some wonderful bear activity. Ursala decided that this
would be a good place to nurse her cub(see here). After this we
hiked to a distant meadow. Ursala follow after a while. We observed
her for a while, and then moved on.
Out of nowhere came another mother with a spring cub. The camp
staff had not yet seen this bear and cub. It was amazing to see the
interaction between these two. They started our in the distance and
moved closes and closer. They actually circled the small elevated
piece of land we were sitting on. This sow was incredible, large fluffy
and close. Sow with spring cub Dinner …we did not go out this night as
it rained. We felt no loss, the interaction we had earlier this day was
satisfying.
Day 5
